As I'm sitting here trying to grow a business, watching CNBC and learning that someone on Wall St. decided the market needed to lose over 600 points before the day even started, it just goes to show that the relationship between retailers and their key suppliers isn't all that's dysfunctional. Unlike the stock market, retailers know exactly what to expect from suppliers. Why? Because they measure their performance. Like Santa, they know who's been good and who's been bad. Exception-based receiving software has been around for awhile, but now every retail software business is in the fray of coming up with their own versions. Exceptions like Shipped Not Ordered & Substitutions, Shortages, and Early-Late Arrival are all monitored and when appropriate, a deduction is assessed. This system puts pressure on suppliers to better manage their order fulfillment processes.
